Lowe is currently finalizing a contract with Boston, as first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan. It is not clear what the terms of this deal are, though the deal is likely to be a contract through the end of the season. Lowe was a free agent after Washington designated the veteran slugger for assignment earlier this week.
Lowe was in the midst of his first season with the Nationals in 2025. He hit 16 home runs and 68 RBI across 119 games for the National League East outfit. However, he slashed .216/.292/.373 during those games. This marks his worst slash line for a full season to this point in his career.
How Nathaniel Lowe fits Red Sox

The Red Sox have sought to fill their hole at first base following the Triston Casas injury. Boston put in an effort to convince Rafael Devers to play first base, which was rather highly publicized. Devers refused to do so for the Red Sox, though he went on to play first following his trade to the San Francisco Giants.
A number of players have worn the first base glove for Boston since Casas was lost for the season. Abraham Toro, Romy Gonzalez, Nick Sogard, and Connor Wong have played at least one game at first. Toro has spent the most amount of time there, playing 65 games as the first baseman.
Lowe gives the team a better option at the position. While his numbers aren’t entirely inspiring, he does provide a bit of pop and can drive in some runs. It will certainly be interesting to see how he performs with Boston for the remainder of the season.
