Dallas Cowboys’ standout linebacker Micah Parsons has made it clear he is done playing in Dallas, but will owner Jerry Jones actually listen to his disgruntled star and find a trade partner? Multiple recent trade proposals have linked the ex-Penn State star to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for a hefty package.
Parsons is in the final year of his rookie contract, and wants to get paid with his first extension. However, how much he gets paid is where the star linebacker and the Cowboys’ owner disagree, and has ultimately led to the current situation.
Parsons had played like one of the best defenders in the NFL across his first four years in the league, and he wants to be paid as the best. The linebacker has made the Pro Bowl every year, made the All-Pro team twice and won Defensive Rookie of the Year. Parsons has collected at least 12 sacks and tackles for losses in every season and has accumulated 112 quarterback hits.
If Jones does decide to give the Cowboys’ star what he wants, the team Parsons lands with will have to give up a loaded package. Multiple trade proposals have suggested it will take multiple first round picks, a second round pick and a talented defensive player to lure Parsons out of Dallas.
One proposal offered defensive end Lukas Van Ness as that ‘talented defensive player,’ who the Packers drafted in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Another proposal offered a first, second and third round pick, and edge rusher Rashan Gary, who the Packers drafted 12th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Van Ness would a younger, less proven option with development and growth upside. Meanwhile, the Gary deal offers less draft capital along with a strong, proven defensive player with more experience in the NFL.
The second week of the NFL preseason kicks off this weekend and both the Packers and Cowboys will be in action on Saturday. With less than 20 days until the Cowboys season begins on September 4, Parsons’ situation will be something to monitor closely.
For the Packers, the addition of Parsons would immediately solve any pass rush issues and put them firmly in the conversation as Super Bowl contenders in the NFC.
