People thought he was a coyote and either ran from him or ignored him altogether. But he wasn’t what he appeared. Read on to learn more about this incredible story and remarkable transformation.
When people first spotted him, they kept their distance. With his thin frame, matted fur, and wary eyes, many assumed he was a coyote. But in truth, he was a dog who had never once felt a gentle touch from a human hand. Having grown up without human contact, his fear was instinctive. The moment anyone tried to approach, he bolted.
Even so, a team of rescuers refused to give up on him. They worked with remarkable patience, moving slowly and giving him time to adjust to their presence. Eventually, they managed to slip a leash over his head and guide him into their vehicle. But it wasn’t easy. The moment they tried to handle him, he lashed out in fear, forcing them to move with extra care. But once he was secured, his long journey toward safety began.
The dog was taken to The Animal Pad rescue, where his story caught the attention of Erica, a producer at The Dodo. After spotting his photo online, she felt compelled to learn more. A little digging on Instagram led her to his foster mom, LB, who lived in the same city. LB volunteered with The Animal Pad and had taken the dog, now named Simba, under her wing.
Erica reached out, and the two spent hours talking over video chat. LB shared the uphill battle of earning Simba’s trust and the incredible transformation that came once he was cleaned and cared for. “She barked at him every day, unless she was on the porch. Then, she demanded pets and belly rubs,” LB said of another dog she’d fostered, comparing how different the process was with Simba. When Erica saw photos of him after his grooming, she could hardly believe it was the same dog.
She asked LB to keep her updated on Simba’s progress, and soon, an exciting message arrived: Simba had climbed into her lap for the first time. Considering how fearful he had been, this was a turning point. Day after day, he continued to open up. Before long, he was ready for his first walk, so Erica arranged to meet them in person. They headed to the beach, and Simba’s joy was unmistakable. He was smiling in every photo.
Their connection grew quickly. Erica even became his dog sitter, giving them more time together. Eventually, both women agreed that Simba was ready for his forever home. Wanting to give him the best chance, Erica decided to share his story through The Dodo’s platform. The response was overwhelming, and it wasn’t long before Simba’s new family was found.
Simba represents rescue dogs who deserve and require patience and persistence. They need time to adjust and are worth the effort. Please consider adopting a dog like Simba. What they’ve achieved is truly a miracle. Thank you to the rescuers, trainers, and foster families who continue to work hard and ask for so little in return.
