Red Sox predicted to possibly acquire recently DFA’d Gold Glove, Silver Slugger to replace Abraham Toro originally appeared on The Sporting News
The Boston Red Sox have been having trouble at first base for a while now, as their main man Triston Casas has been very injury prone, missing most of last season and will miss most of this season. Abraham Toro has been a good sub, but his numbers recently are abysmal, and the Sox need a change.

With the deadline passed, they don’t have many options. However, one might have landed right into their lap. Red Sox analyst Tyler Milliken believes that the Sox might sign Nathaniel Lowe, a first baseman who was recently designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals.

Lowe was a Gold Glover and a Silver Slugger for his previous team before the Nats, the Texas Rangers. With the Nats, he’s regressed a bit, slashing .216/.292/.373/.665 with 16 home runs and 17 doubles. While it seems like his hitting is down, it looked like he was beginning to figure it out, hitting a grand slam in his last game with Washington.
So why Lowe over Toro? At first glance, Toro looks like the better player. Currently, Toro is slashing .249/.301/.388/.689 with seven homers on the season. However, looking closer into it, he’s actually doing much worse.

Since July 1st, Toro is hitting .200 with only 21 hits, two of them being homers, and he’s played in 31 games.
So, Lowe might be the perfect sidegrade. However, Boston may be content with Toro, and may even call Kristian Campbell up to take his place. Either way, first base is a problem they need to solve in the offseason.
