Patrick Mahomes Pays Respects to Beloved Chief Who Just Retired

Former Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu opted to retire on Tuesday, deciding it was time to walk away.

Spending the last two seasons with the New Orleans Saints can’t have been pleasant for a star player who had grown used to a level of winning with the Chiefs. And there was little left to accomplish for Mathieu, who already helped KC win a championship as a leading part of the defense.

Given how important the Honey Badger was, it’s no surprise to see several Chiefs speak out on him after his retirement, and Patrick Mahomes led the chorus when the news first broke.

Congrats to my Man! @Mathieu_Era one of the best to ever do it! https://t.co/mqu54a1ZkU

Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes Congratulates Tyrann Mathieu

Mahomes wasted no time responding to the former teammate’s decision, calling the safety “one of the best to ever do it.”

When it comes to Mathieu’s decorated career, it’s hard to argue against Mahomes’ praise. He not only racked up numerous personal accomplishments but also meant a lot every franchise he played for.

Perhaps the defender’s most memorable moment for Kansas City was the decision to get into it with legendary quarterback Tom Brady in the middle of a Super Bowl showdown. It was a telling interaction, speaking to the willingness to fight for his team no matter who is standing on the other sideline.

Looking back, the Chiefs did end up making the right decision walking away when they did. Not offering Mathieu a contract was an odd decision at the time, but one that unquestionably worked out in their favor. This same story is currently playing out with Justin Reid, who enjoyed a great tenure with the Chiefs before cashing in during free agency with the Saints.

With that said, it is important to appreciate the gravity of Mahomes’ statement and how much Mathieu helped set the tone for the dynasty that has continued since his departure. The safety will be remembered fondly not only by Mahomes but also by Chiefs fans who understand just how impactful the defender’s three seasons were for Kansas City.
