The Chicago Cubs are exploring all options on the trade market for a starting pitcher, and they know it’s a need to go deep into the playoffs.
Chicago has just about two weeks left to make a move, and Mike Axisa from CBS Sports believes the team will pursue Seth Lugo from the Kansas City Royals.
“The trade market figures to be short on quality starters,” wrote Axisa. “Cashing in Lugo, who has a $15 million player option for 2026, as a trade chip may be the best way for Kansas City to get the offensive help they so desperately need.”
Here is the full trade Axisa predicts:
- Chicago Cubs acquire: RHP Seth Lugo
- Kansas City Royals acquire: OF Owen Caissie, LHP Jordan Wicks
“Outfielder Owen Caissie and lefty Jordan Wicks will headline the return,” wrote Axisa. “Caissie is the kind of power hitter the Royals need and Wicks can step into the rotation post-Lugo.”
The Cubs know if they want to acquire starting pitching in the next few weeks that one or both of their top outfield prospects will have to be traded. However, the organization seems to be content with that, as they have not publicly stated either of them are untouchable.
Wicks would give Kansas City an arm in the rotation to take Lugo’s spot, but the move would also indicate the Royals’ plan to become sellers at the deadline. If they fall out of contention, Chicago should be all over Lugo as he proven to be consistent and find ways to get outs.
