The New York Yankees are likely to be active on the trade block in the coming weeks, but nobody has the perfect idea of which players they could be eyeing. While there are rumors flowing, the Yankees haven’t made a deal yet.
If the Yankees are going to pursue a trade for a superstar, which is a possibility, the front office is going to have to cut ties with top prospects in return.
FanSided’s Zachary Rotman recently suggested the Yankees could sell high on talented outfield prospect Spencer Jones ahead of the trade deadline.
“Spencer Jones went from being an untouchable to one of the most disappointing prospects in the game to a player who appears to have fully bounced back,” Rotman wrote. “The strikeout concerns are still very real, making his profile extremely boom or bust, but he’s a tremendous athlete and has tons of power. The tools are there for him to be a superstar one day, and he’s putting superstar numbers this season.
“The 24-year-old has a 1.032 OPS in 58 games overall this season. The last nine of those games have come at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and he’s dominated in those contests. Jones has immense potential, and the fact that he’s having as great a season as he has makes him an ideal sell-high candidate.”
It would take a superstar trade for the Yankees to give up somebody like Jones. There’s a chance the front office in New York views the talented outfielder as their third outfielder of the future besides Aaron Judge and Jasson Dominguez.
While he could work as a sell-high candidate, it would take a massive deal to pull him from the Yankees. A deal for Sandy Alcántara, Jhoan Duran, or another star pitcher could work.
It’s unlikely the Yankees pursue a superstar on the trade block, so it’s unlikely Jones is dealt. Players like Eugenio Suárez and Merrill Kelly are closer to the Yankees’ price range.
