Trade Breaking: Dodgers Linked to Potential $100 Million Ace in Free Agency

The Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly expected to be interested in signing pitcher Blake Snell this offseason, per Will Sammon and Katie Woo of The Athletic. The Dodgers were reportedly interested in Snell last season and considered trading for him, but Snell spent the 2024 season with the San Francisco Giants.

After a long free agency, Snell signed with the Giants on a two-year, $62 million deal in March. Following the 2024 season, Snell exercised his opt out clause, making him a free agent again.

The Giants are expected to be in play to re-sign Snell, and the New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, and Texas Rangers could reportedly also have interest in Snell.

Snell finished the 2024 season going 5-3 with a 3.12 ERA and 145 strikeouts. Snell did miss time during the first half of the season because of injury, but was excellent after the All-Star break. Snell posted an ERA below 2.00 following the All-Star break, and heads into free agency as one of the hottest pitchers in MLB.

The Dodgers are looking to add to their starting rotation after injuries held them back heading into the postseason. The Dodgers dealt with a multitude of injuries to their rotation this season, including to Clayton Kershaw, Tyler Glasnow, and Gavin Stone.

The Dodgers are expected to add Ohtani to the rotation in 2025, but will have decisions to make especially since Walker Buehler and Jack Flaherty are currently free agents.

The Dodgers also have a greater level of familiarity with Snell. Snell has now played for the Giants and San Diego Padres, two of the Dodgers’ National League West division rivals, so the Dodgers have gone up against him plenty of times.

In Snell, the Dodgers would get a pitcher that has proven to be one of the best in MLB over recent seasons. Snell won the Cy Young award in both 2018 and 2023, when he led the MLB in ERA. In 2018, Snell went 21-5 and posted a 1.89 ERA and 221 strikeouts, and in 2023, he recorded a 2.25 ERA and a career-high 234 strikeouts.

Snell is projected to get a contract north of $100 million this offseason on a multi-year deal.
