The Milwaukee Brewers recently declined the club option on its superstar closer Devin Williams’ contract, opting to let him enter his final year of arbitration instead.
Because of this, trade rumors have begun to swirl around the All-Star closer. ESPN’s Jeff Passan made comments after this decision, indicating that Williams could be a trade candidate this winter.
If Williams is going to be available, there will be no shortage of teams lining up to acquire him.
He’s one of the best relief arms in the entire league. Williams has posted ERAs of 3.95, 0.33, 2.50, 1.93, 1.53, and 1.25 over the first six years of his big league career, respectively. That’s good for a 1.83 career ERA over 235.2 innings pitched.
But if the Brewers are to deal him, who are the most likely suitors?
New York Mets
The New York Mets already have a closer, but it wouldn’t hurt to add more bullpen talent. In fact, adding Williams would give the Mets the best one-two bullpen punch across the entire league. New York is going to be incredibly aggressive in free agency this winter.
There’s no reason that the front office wouldn’t explore a trade for one of the best closers in baseball. It’s the kind of move that could save Steve Cohen some serious money in free agency.
New York Yankees
The New York Yankees are one of the more aggressive teams pursuing bullpen help during the early stages of free agency this offseason.
New York doesn’t have a true closer, though Luke Weaver stepped up in a big way down the stretch. Weaver is likely more of a seventh or eighth-inning guy than a World Series closer. New York has the prospect capital to get a deal done with Milwaukee.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is going to be negotiating with top free agent position players this winter, likely spending a lot of money to bring top talent in. Acquiring a closer through a trade would be a dream come true for manager Aaron Boone and the Yankees.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers could begin to have a money problem if they continue to spend the way that some insiders project them to. Los Angeles has been connected to just about every big-name free agent just a year after issuing over $1 billion last free agency.
To save money, Los Angeles could bring Williams to the West Coast rather than signing an elite closer such as Tanner Scott for a ton of money across three or four seasons. Los Angeles has some top starting pitching prospects that they could move in the deal.
Philadelphia Phillies
The Philadelphia Phillies will be very aggressive in acquiring bullpen help this winter. The Phillies are set to lose relievers Carlos Estévez and Jeff Hoffman in free agency this winter, though I think they’ll bring at least one of these relievers back.
Still, a trade for Williams would solve a lot of issues in Philadelphia. If any team had the reason to take a massive leap at the Brewers closer, it’s manager Rob Thomson’s Phillies.
