Astros trade Miguel Castro to White Sox

Houston Astros pitcher Miguel Castro throws a pitch during the third inning against the New York Mets.

The Houston Astros have made an early move in the MLB trade season, sending veteran right-hander Miguel Castro to the Chicago White Sox. According to a post on X (formerly Twitter) from Robert Murray of FanSided, the deal was finalized earlier this week, signalizing the start of a possible roster shakeup as the Astros evaluate their direction ahead of the trade deadline.

“Sources: The Chicago White Sox are acquiring pitcher Miguel Castro in a trade with the Houston Astros. Castro, 30, was most recently in the majors last season with the Arizona Diamondbacks,” Murray’s post read. “He has a 2.29 ERA in 17 games in Triple-A this season.”

This trade adds a proven veteran arm to a struggling White Sox bullpen. While Chicago sits near the bottom of the American League Standings at 14-30 coming into the day, this move suggest a willingness to experiment with cost-effective talent. Castro’s strong Triple-A numbers this season, a 2.29 ERA, 1.169 WHIP, and a 9.2 K/9, make him an intriguing pick up for a club looking to find hidden value.

Houston, currently 22-20, boasts one of the leagues strongest bullpens, with stars like Josh Hader and Bryan Abreu leading the way. With such depth, Castro was unlikely to crack the major league roster, despite his solid showing in Spring Training. He signed a one-year minor league deal with a non-roster invite and held a 3.72 ERA during camp but failed to secure a roster spot.

This marks another strategic shift in Astros news, as the front office balance is winning now with roster flexibility. Castro’s past shoulder issues and inconsistent performances, like his 5.93 ERA with the Arizona Diamondbacks last year, may have played into the decision to part ways.

From Chicago’s side, the move fits a familiar pattern. The club has routinely taken flyers on journeymen, hoping for mid-season value or trade chips later on before the deadline. As MLB trade news heats up, Castro could serve as a low-risk bullpen arm who, if effective, might even be flipped again before the deadline.

For Houston, this is a minor, yet strategic move that one that opens up space while keeping an eye on potential future deals.
