The Boston Red Sox have a lot of talent on their roster, but there are two clear holes to patch up. One is in the starting rotation and one is in the bullpen. Earlier this week, I proposed a hypothetical trade that would send Cincinnati Reds pitchers Alexis Diaz and Nick Martinez to Boston in order to patch up both of these holes in one blockbuster move. Here are the full details of the hypothetical trade:
Red Sox acquire: RHP Nick Martinez, RHP Alexis Diaz Reds acquire: UTL Ceddanne Rafaela, OF Yophery Rodriguez, RHP Luis Guerrero This trade would benefit both teams this season. The Reds have the pitching depth to trade away both Diaz and Martinez, while the Red Sox have the outfield depth to part ways with Ceddanne Rafaela. Once Rhett Lowder returns from injury, he could replace Martinez in Cincinnati. But in Boston, Martinez would be a consistent staple to the Red Sox’s rotation. As for Diaz, he looked a bit shaky during his rehab stint, but he’s back in Cincinnati as a high-leverage reliever. He could slot in as the setup man or closer in Boston.
Rafaela would be a huge addition for a Reds team that has next to zero consistent depth in the outfield. Boston needs to clear a spot for its top outfield prospect, Roman Anthony, and trading Rafaela would give Anthony a clear spot in the lineup. Luis Guerrero could slot into Cincinnati’s bullpen at some point this year. Yophery Rodriguez would be a solid young outfield prospect to slot into Cincinnati’s farm system.
The Red Sox have a lot of prospect depth, so they should be comfortable trading these players to bring in two win-now pitchers this year. If Boston wants to top the New York Yankees in the American League East, a trade like this would be vital.
