Spencer Schwellenbach dominates and Austin Riley hits a bomb in Atlanta Braves spring training - Battery Power

The Atlanta Braves took on the New York Yankees away as spring training is coming to a close. Spencer Schwellenbach was on the bump against a lineup that featured the reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge.

Schwellenbach starting off the game in dominating fashion. He was able to get Austin Wells to groundout and then strikeout Aaron Judge and Dominic Smith back-to-back. Those were strikeouts seventeen and eighteen of this spring to only one walk.

Unfortunately, his streak of strikeouts to walks ended when he walked Trent Grisham to lead off the bottom half of the second. The walk ultimately did not do any damage because Matt Olson was able to turn an unassisted double play off of a line drive and then Schwellenbach settled back in and finished off the inning with another strikeout.

In the third Schwellenbach faced former Braves prospect Braden Shewmake. Schwellenbach won the battle of Braves prospects when he got Shewmake to pop up to third. Schwellenbach then cruised through the rest of the inning by facing the minimum batters.

Schwellenbach’s no-hitter was broken up when Austin Wells singled in the fourth. Schwellenbach stayed locked in though, and was able to prevent any damage by forcing a ground out to Aaron Judge followed by two more strikeouts.

It is clear that the Braves are ramping up Schwellenbach because they left him in for the fifth inning. Schwellenbach did not disappoint when he struck out the side to make it eight strikeouts in only five innings of work.

Schwellenbach stayed in for the sixth inning and promptly got another strikeout. He had two strikes on next hitter, Duke Ellis, but he was able to hit a single. Drake Baldwin then threw out Ellis trying to steal second and Schwellenbach struck out Shewmake for his tenth strikeout.

Schwellenbach ended his night with 6.0 innings pitched with ten strikeouts, two singles, and one walk.

Amos Willingham relieved Schwellenbach and pitched 2.0 and prevented any runs from the Yankees, but he stayed in to pitch the ninth and struggled. He forced a popup, but then gave up two straight hits. Hayden Harristhen came in and struck out the two batters he faced to end the game.

Offense

Ozzie Albies was able to get things going to start the game with a singled on a line drive to right field, but it did not result in any runs because Austin Riley, Matt Olson, and Bryan De La Cruz were retired in order.

The offense was quiet in the second, but the third inning started much like the first. Jarred Kelenic hit a single via a sharp line drive to right field. Eli White, who has been hot, struck out. Ozzie Albies continued his solid start to the game with a walk, but ultimately Austin Riley hit into a double play to end it. The fourth inning was just as quiet as the second when the Braves could not muster a single runner when Olson, De La Cruz, and Harris could not get anything going.

The Braves finally had a baserunner in the fifth, but it was when Orlando Arcia got hit by a pitch. Other than that, the Braves were still silent at the plate.

The Braves finally broke through in the sixth inning once Carlos Carrasco was removed from the game. Ozzie Albies reached base for a third time. This time was from an error, but we will take it because Austin Riley took Fernando Cruz deep to right field to make the score 2-0. Olson apparently wanted to join the fun as he was able to draw a walk to keep the momentum going. De La Cruz had a valiant effort by working the count to eight pitches when the count started 0-2 but ended up striking out. Matt Olson was able to move to second on a wild pitch. After the at-bat veteran Tim Hill came in. Olson moved to third and Drake Baldwin walked after a battle at the plate to put runners on the corners, but Orlando Arcia hit a grounder to end the top of the sixth.

In the seventh Kelenic recorded his second hit of the night with another single. Eli White followed that up with a single. After that the subs came in which resulted in Luke Williams getting the sacrifice fly to make the score 3-0 before the top half of the inning ended.

Once all the starters came out of the game Patrick Clohisy hit his first HR of the spring to make the score 4-0, which is where the game ended.

In Summary

Spencer Schwellenbach dominated once again with ten strikeouts to only one walk while allowing only two singles over 6.0 innings.

The Braves’ offense took awhile to get it going but Austin Riley hit a HR to break open the score. The Braves starters only had four hits.

The Braves face the Phillies tomorrow in another spring matchup. The first pitch is at 12:05 eastern.
