FANS shared their displeasure with the Dallas Cowboys’ latest contract handed to a front office member.
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has been hit with criticism over his latest move.
On Wednesday, the Cowboys announced that vice president of player personnel Will McClay has penned a multi-year contract extension to stay with the franchise.
McClay’s previous deal with the Cowboys was set to expire after the 2025 NFL Draft.
The 58-year-old player recruiter has been in Dallas since 2002 and has had the current role since 2017.
However, fans of the Cowboys have taken issue with Jones over the extension on social media.
“Cowboys remain the laughingstock of the NFL. Sell the team Jerry Jones (He never will),” one commented.
“Nothing will change,” another wrote.
“Jerry suck at his job,” a third added.
During McClay’s two-decade-plus tenure in Dallas, the organization has a 4-10 record in the playoffs.
Still, McClay has been credited with overseeing the Cowboys’ draft strategy since 2014.
The franchise has drafted 15 Pro Bowlers and six All-Pros, and McCloy has been credited with the draft picks of Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons, among others.
Dallas Cowboys fans urge Jerry Jones to sell team and take up Hollywood career after acting appearance on hit TV show
McClay has had as much power as any executive who isn’t officially a president or general manager.
It’s worth noting the Cowboys’ front office consists of the owner, Jones, acting as the general manager, and the owner’s son, Stephen, is the director of player personnel.
The McClay extension comes after a disappointing 7-10 season that saw Prescott suffer a season-ending hamstring injury.
Mike McCarthy and the Cowboys parted ways after the 61-year-old’s five-year run.
Last week, Jones stunned the NFL world with his head coaching hire of Brian Schottenheimer.
The son of the late NFL icon Marty Schottenheimer has no head coaching experience and has been a career-long assistant.
During Schottenheimer’s introductory press conference, Jones admitted the hire “is as big a risk as you can take.
“How often do you have someone that has 25 years of working through the human relationship and aspiring to learn – having his ears and eyes wide open – looking for techniques and looking for things that make coaches better?” he added.
The Cowboys have also hired Matt Eberflus to be their defensive coordinator.
Eberflus’ was the Chicago Bears’ head coach for the last three campaigns and was fired in November.
He led the franchise to 3-14, 7-10, and 4-8 records.
Eberflus was previously the Cowboys’ linebackers coach from 2011-2015.
Dallas is still looking for its next offensive coordinator.
