Head coach Matt LaFleur and the Green Bay Packers may soon have another vacancy to fill on the coaching staff, this offseason.
Already in the market for a defensive line coach, and missing out on potentially one of the organization’s top targets for the position, and a quarterbacks coach, LaFleur may be about to lose one of his most trusted assistants, as well.
According to a report from Josh Liles of Pro Football Post, Packers assistant head coach and special teams coach Rich Bisaccia has emerged as a “sleeper” candidate for the Dallas Cowboys head coaching vacancy.
“According to a high-ranking executive in the league, the Cowboys are interested in Packers special teams coordinator and former Raiders interim head coach Rich Bisaccia,” Liles writes. “Neither the Cowboys nor the Packers have responded to inquiries whether Dallas has sought or received permission from Green Bay to interview Bisaccia, who’s entering the final year of his contract in Green Bay.”
Bisaccia, of course, has prior head coaching experience from his time with the Raiders, and has spent the past three seasons on the Packers staff, including garnering the title of assistant coach this past season. He also has the dubious distinction of being only the second interim head coach to ever make the playoffs and not be elevated into the fullt-time role, as a result.
While it is rare that special teams coaches are hired as head coaches, the New York Giants hired Joe Judge back in 2020, and John Harbaugh won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens after starting his career as Andy Reid’s special teams coach with the Philadelphia Eagles.
It remains to be seen how serious a candidate Bisaccia is for the Cowboys opening, but a potential departure would create even more turnover on the Packers’ coaching staff this offseason.
