Yankees Could Sign All-Star Middle Infielder to Replace Gleyber Torres

The New York Yankees are in search of an infielder after Gleyber Torres signed with the Detroit Tigers. Currently, Anthony Volpe is projected to be the opening day shortstop with either Jazz Chisholm or Oswaldo Cabrera penciled in at second base. However, the Yankees know they have to add someone before the season starts. Could Jose Iglesias be the right fit for them?

Iglesias missed half of the season in 2024 along with all of 2023. The games he played with the New York Mets were productive as he hit .337 with 26 RBI. Iglesias is versatile defensively as he can play second base, shortstop or third base. Even at 34 years old, he is still capable of being an everyday player. However, the Yankees could opt to use him as part of a platoon at second base. Iglesias is projected to make just $1.7 million in 2025, a number that is more than manageable for the Yankees.

In his last full season with the Rockies in 2022, he hit .292 with 47 RBI. Iglesias hasn’t ended a season hitting lower than .250 since 2012, when he was still trying to break into the league. Iglesias is an ideal fit for the Yankees. His versatility is something Aaron Boone would be excited about as Boone could deploy him in a variety of ways. Over the course of his career, he’s been better than Gleyber Torres both offensively and defensively.

The only downside to Iglesias is his age, but he’s not showing any signs of slowing down.
