Red Sox boss on Triston Casas trade rumors: ‘Nothing came remotely close’

As the Red Sox have explored various ways to overhaul their roster so far this winter, Triston Casas’ name has come up frequently as a potential trade candidate. On Monday, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow ardently claimed that those rumors represented more smoke than fire.

Throughout December, reports from The Boston Globe, Seattle Times and MLB.com noted that the Red Sox have been more than willing to listen on Casas in discussions with other clubs. On December 7, the Globe’s Alex Speier wrote that the Sox had offered Casas to at least one team in an attempt to land pitching help. Last week, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported that the Red Sox were willing to entertain a package of Casas and highly paid designated hitter Masataka Yoshida for Mariners starter Luis Castillo before Boston landed Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler.

Now, though, Breslow seems to want it clear to Casas that the Red Sox view him as big piece of their roster in 2025.

“I’m not totally sure where it comes from,” Breslow said. “We’re not shopping Triston. We see him as a guy that can hit in the middle of the lineup for a really long time here in Boston. Obviously, plus power, plus strike zone judgment, the ability to get on base, and it’s someone that I don’t think we’ve seen the best of. He obviously missed a number of months during the season. We’re really excited for him to be completely healthy. He’s had a full healthy offseason.

“When you have really good young players, I don’t think it’s surprising that other teams would ask about them. But I’ve seen some of the speculation about what what deals may or may not have existed or what may or may not have been proposed. And there was nothing that was remotely close. We’re certainly not shopping him.”

Considering Boston’s widely reported willingness to listen on the soon-to-be 25-year-old Casas, it’s possible Breslow’s claim is true and that the Red Sox were reacting to Casas being brought up by other teams instead of actively mentioning his name first. At this point, his status on Boston’s roster seems more safe than it did a month ago with the heavy lifting in the rotation done via the Crochet trade (in which no one from the MLB roster went to the White Sox) and signing of Buehler.

Breslow, who identified right-handed pop and bullpen as the two most pressing areas of need for Boston, also reiterated that the Red Sox planned to keep Rafael Devers at third base barring a drastic change. The club has been linked to free agent Alex Bregman as a potential second base option and St. Louis’ Nolan Arenado, who would almost certainly stay at third if moved.

“Raffy is our third baseman,” Breslow said. “He’s having a really productive offseason. Saw him a couple of weeks ago. Looks great. Feels great. “We’re really optimistic about what we’re going to get out of him. He’s talked about coming to Fort Myers early this year and really focusing on getting himself ready to have a great season.

“With that said, we’ll be open-minded and we’ll be creative in terms of how we put together the best roster, but as things stand right now, Raffy is our third baseman.”
