FLUSHING, NY (WBNG) — The New York Mets announced on Friday, they will retire David Wright’s #5 jersey and induct the club’s 14 year long 3rd Baseman into its Hall of Fame.
The ceremonies are scheduled for Saturday, July 19th before the Mets game against the Cincinnati Reds.
Wright spent his entire career playing in New York, making his debut with the club in 2004. He was the 38th overall pick of New York in 2001. Wright retired after the 2018 season.
In his time in Queens Wright batter .296, with 242 home runs, and 1,777 hits. He was named an All-Star and 7 occasions, a winner of 2 Gold Gloves, 2 Silver Sluggers, and finished in the NL MVP voting 4 times.
#5 is the Mets franchise leader in more than a dozen statistically categories including hits (1,777), RBI (970), singles (1119), doubles (390), runs scored (949), walks (762), and is second all-time in wins above replacement (49.2).
Wright served as the 4th Captain in franchise history. He earned the nicknamed as “Captain America” after his performance for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. Wright hit .483 with a grand slam and 10 RBI in the 2013 WBC.
In 2004, Wright played 60 games for the Binghamton Mets before being called up to the Major Leagues. In Double-A Binghamton Wright hit .363, launching 10 home runs, driving in 40 runs, and stole 40 bags.
