Taylor Swift fans slam Shakira for ‘copycat’ Eras tour: ‘So obvious’

A number of Taylor Swift fans on Tuesday said Shakira was lifting too many creative elements from Swift’s Eras Tour for her upcoming trek, the Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour.

Feedback from a vocal segment of Swifties came amid news that Shakira’s upcoming world tour has already managed to smash one of Swift’s Eras Tour records: Shakira, 47, became the first female artist to sell out five consecutive stadium shows at Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City, per Marca.

Swift, 34, previously held the record with four consecutive sold-out shows at the stadium, which was previously known as Foro Sol, on her most recent tour.

An unaffiliated Swift fan account on X/Twitter generated a number of reactions after posting purported merchandise and set/flooring plans from Shakira’s team that mirrored Swift’s marketing.

‘The inspiration is so obviously taken from the eras tour but if this goes viral they will be doing mental gymnastics to act like it isn’t,’ said one user.

One user joked that Shakira, 47, ‘said The Eras Tour is NOT over yet’ while another said Shakira’s team ‘might as well call it Taylor’s eras tour.’

One fan reacted to a clip in the thread purportedly showing video of Shakira’s rehearsals for the tour, alleging that Shakira and her team were also copying Swift’s choreography with their forthcoming stage show.

‘She also has a a jump into the water lol,’ the fan said. ‘I think she and her team studied the eras tour to make something like the eras tour.’

Swift would be heavily scrutinized if she was on the other end of the discussion, multiple fans said.

‘If t**lor copied someone this obviously #they’d never stop talking about,’ one user said, while another added, ‘imagine if taylor had copied another artist there would have been murder.’

Some Swift fans were more sympathetic to the South American songstress, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll.

‘It’s okay cause we love Shakira,’ one user said, while another added, ‘mother is carrying the legacy but in’ Spanish.

One fan said that ‘Shakira had eras before Taylor was born’ while another jokingly called the upcoming trek, ‘The shakeras tour.’

Shakira had previously announced just four shows at the stadium, but she added a fifth record-breaking sold-out show in response to extraordinary fan demand.

‘Mexico dear, five dates at the Estadio GNP … we broke the record,’ Shakira reportedly wrote on social media to celebrate the milestone.

According to Estadio GNP Seguros’ website, the venue – which is the second-largest stadium in Mexico City – has a capacity of 65,000 people for concert events.

Shakira said she has delayed dates on the North American leg of her tour in order to move shows from arenas to larger stadiums.

‘The demand for tickets and more shows has reached the point that our tour now requires stadiums in the USA and more dates so I can see as many of you as possible,’ Shakira said on her Instagram Stories on Friday, according to Billboard. ‘As a result, we’re elevating my North America run from arenas to stadiums and the dates will be shifted to May 2025, right after my Latin American tour.’

The move initially disappointed some fans who didn’t want to wait to see the Whenever, Wherever artist, but now many more fans will have a chance to catch her concerts.

Her good fortune contrasts with other established artists – including Jennifer Lopez and The Black Keys – who have been forced to cancel or downgrade their tours after they failed to attract the same level of fan interest as in previous years

Last week, the Latin American star unveiled the music video for her single Soltera, and the clip has already earned an eye-popping 26 million views as of Monday.

Shakira’s Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour is named after the album of the same name, which she released in March.

The LP – whose title translates to Women No Longer Cry – was a hit across the world, and particular in the U.S., where it topped both Billboard’s Latin Pop Albums chart and its Top Latin Albums chart.

The album also topped out at an impressive number 13 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and it has been certified 7x Platinum for over 420,000 album-equivalent units by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Shakira’s world tour will kick off in 2025 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on February 11, followed by stops in Peru, her home country of Colombia, Chile, Argentina and Mexico.

After a break between March and May, the tour will resume in Charlotte, North Carolina, on May 13, followed by dates in the Northeast, South and West.
