Cubs’ Explosive Double Bomb: Snagging a Battle-Hardened Veteran Ace While Teeing Up Another Massive Blockbuster – Turning Wrigley Into a War Machine or Chasing Ghosts?

Cubs linked to making two bold moves.

The Chicago Cubs have had a relatively quiet offseason, but that could soon change.

Chicago is looking to add some more offense and pitching. Meanwhile, the Cubs have also been linked to trading away the likes of Nico Hoerner and Matt Shaw.

However, MLB insider Jon Heyman of The New York Post believes the Cubs are interested in signing Zac Gallen, along with adding an outfielder.

“They, too, have been linked to Gallen, and another outfielder could make sense,” Heyman wrote. “They’ve been listening in on star second baseman Nico Hoerner, who’s entering his walk year, and second-year infielder Matt Shaw, with Boston a possible fit since they are trying to improve their infield and have an extra outfielder.”

The Cubs have been interested in Gallen all offseason, so Chicago signing him wouldn’t be a huge surprise. Gallen would be a perfect No. 3 or No. 4 starter for the Cubs and add some veteran presence to the rotation.

The 30-year-old went 13-15 with a 4.83 ERA in 33 starts last season with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

As for the outfielder, it’s uncertain who that would be that the Cubs would be interested in. But the top remaining free agent outfielders are Starling Marte, Michael Conforto, Randal Grichuk, Jesse Winker, Max Kepler, and Tommy Pham, among others.

However, the Cubs could also acquire an outfielder in return for trading away Hoerner or Shaw. So, it appears Chicago could be a team to watch before spring training begins.

Cubs Linked to Potential Trade With Red Sox

Chicago is open to trading Hoerner or Shaw, and the Cubs could make a bold move.

The Cubs have been linked to a potential trade with the Boston Red Sox, and Chicago could get an outfielder in return like Jarren Duran, who’s been mentioned as a trade candidate.

“Donovan is off the board. Paredes isn’t a great fit, nor was Suarez,” Healey wrote on X. “Is Red Sox’ best infield option paying up for Hoerner or Shaw? Cubs are listening. Cost would be high. Would take guts. Hoerner especially would be proof of Breslow’s ‘focus on ’26, not the future’ approach.”

Whether or not the Cubs will end up trading one of them is to be seen. But if it does happen, it could very well happen in the very near future.

Chicago Still Interested in Gallen

The Cubs were talking to Gallen earlier in the offseason, but that never led to a deal.

Now, it appears those talks have intensified, according to MLB insider Bruce Levine on 670 The Score.

“Those talks are ongoing. My reporting is the possibility is that it’ll be a shorter-term type of deal,” Levine said about the Cubs’ interest in Gallen.

Gallen would be a perfect fit for the Cubs, and Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said at the GM meetings that adding pitching was the team’s priority.

“That’s going to be our focus,” Hoyer said. “I expect to explore trades. I expect to explore free agency, both at the top of the market, but also looking at Minor League free agency.”

Gallen was an All-Star in 2023.
