Tyreek Hill injury update sparks Chiefs reunion talk for next season

Kansas City Chiefs fans would be lying if they said they hadn’t considered a potential Tyreek Hill reunion at some point this season. It would have made sense considering the Chiefs’ wide receiver woes in their first three games and Hill’s Dolphins underperforming during that time.

That dream died on Monday night when Hill was lost for the season with a knee injury. As soon as Hill was carted off the field, Chiefs fans figured a reunion wouldn’t be happening. (It didn’t hurt to have the offense reawakened against the Baltimore Ravens.) Hill had surgery on Tuesday and, according to Hill’s agent Drew Rosenhaus, “The goal is for Tyreek to be ready for the start of next season.”

If Hill can return to action for the 2026 season, perhaps a reunion with the Chiefs could still be in the cards. With Hill scheduled for a $51 million cap hit next year, the Dolphins likely will release him before the new league year in March. This would be the obvious decision considering that the team will probably be entering a rebuild, and it’s doubtful they’ll keep Hill around for that (or that Hill would want to be there for that).

Tyreek Hill/Chiefs reunion will have to wait until 2026

As for the Chiefs, there’s a plausible need for Hill beyond this season. Hollywood Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Tyquan Thornton are all set to be free agents, and the Chiefs could use an experienced player like Hill. They also might be able to get him on a cheaper contract due to his injury and his age.

Hill has been vocal with his frustrations about the Dolphins’ inability to contend since he’s been there, including mouthing off after the Dolphins finished with a losing record last year. If he had a chance to join the Chiefs, who are a Super Bowl contender as long as Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes are there, you’d have to think he’d jump at that opportunity.

It’s easy to talk about all of this now, but we’ll have to see how this year plays out and how the offseason shakes out as well. If Hill is healthy enough and is willing to take a bit of a hometown discount, it feels like the Chiefs could make sense as a landing spot for him in 2026.
