Red Sox pegged as top trade destination this offseason for $115 million four-time All-Star second baseman

The Boston Red Sox are having a stellar season this year, but there’s nothing stopping them from upgrading in the offseason. Critics believe this too, as they have been putting the Sox in a ton of offseason hypotheticals and predictions.

One of those ideas comes from Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer, who has the Sox have a top spot for landing Ketel Marte, the Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star second baseman. While they aren’t at the top of the top, Rymer still believes it’s possible.

“Second base has been worth only 0.4 rWAR for the Red Sox, and they’ll have a big hole to fill if/when Alex Bregman opts out of his contract. As far as solutions go, though, re-signing him and eventually handing the keystone back to Kristian Campbell is more straightforward,” Rymer wrote.

While Bregman can leave, his time in Boston has proved he likely won’t, and will re-sign for a longer, bigger contract. That would allow Campbell to retake the reins at second, and the Sox would be set for the future.

However, there is another option. Campbell has been taking almost exclusive reps at first base in AAA this season, so he might take that position next year. This means the Sox would be shopping Triston Casas, and still leaves second open, possible for Marte.

Overall, while the Sox might not be the top spot for Marte, they definitely make a case for why they should be. Hopefully they make a run at him in the offseason, so they can at least say they tried.

Red Sox executive Craig Breslow didn’t push the idea away. When asked about hitters, Schwarber included, he said talks were “still pretty early,” noting that free agents are still “getting a feel for the market.” That honesty kept the reunion talk alive. Kyle Schwarber remains one of the few sluggers who proved he could supercharge the Red Sox’s lineup, and fans haven’t forgotten how quickly he changed the 2021 stretch run.
