San Francisco 49ers OT Trent Williams
Things have been pretty rocky between star offensive tackle Trent Williams and the San Francisco 49ers.
Williams has been angling for a new deal since the end of the season, and he and the 49ers haven’t been able to find any middle ground regarding a new deal.
San Francisco has been hesitant to give Williams the money he’s asking for given his age (37), and the fact that he likely won’t play longer than another year or two.
Williams, a 12-time Pro Bowler and five-time All-Pro, is schedule to have a $32 million base salary and $46.3 million cap hit in 2026. The team declined his $10 million option bonus earlier in the offseason.
49ers Working Feverishly to Extend Williams

As the pressure mounts for the two sides to get a deal done, NFL insider Jason La Canfora dropped a new update on where things stand between Williams and the 49ers — and this time it’s a positive one.
“As we hear it, the 49ers made another push to try to get closure in this situation and sent over a revised contract to Williams within the last few days,” La Canfora wrote.
“League sources indicated there is a chance this gets resolved early this week, depending on how comfortable the player is with the latest proposal. And, should the sides not make headway over the coming days, there is potential for this to get sideways.”
La Canfora disclosed the 49ers are willing to pay Williams roughly $36 million in guarantees over the next two seasons, and they’re willing to commit $24 million to him in 2026.
That number would rank Williams seventh among offensive tackles in terms of average annual salary. It’s believed he’s wanting to paid closer to the $30.1 million per year the Washington Commanders are paying Laremy Tunsil.
49ers Could Draft Williams’ Replacement

While there are a number of positions San Francisco can address in the 2026 NFL draft, including wide receiver, edge-rusher, and linebacker, many believe finding a tackle to take over for Williams in a few years is the way to go.
As many as six tackles could go in the first round including Miami’s Francis Mauigoa, Utah’s Spencer Fano, Georgia’s Monroe Freeling, Alabama’s Kadyn Proctor, Utah’s Caleb Lomu, and Clemson’s Blake Miller.
Proctor and Lomu have been popular picks to San Francisco at No. 27 overall in most mock drafts.
There’s also another four — Arizona State’s Max Iheanachor, Iowa State’s Gennings Dunker, Northwestern’s Caleb Tiernan, Miami’s Markel Bell — who could go in Round 2.
So far, the 49ers have had three virtual/phone pre-draft interviews with offensive linemen — Florida tackle Austin Barber, Michigan interior offensive lineman Greg Crippen, and Oregon IOL Alex Harkey. They’ve also met with Memphis tackle Travis Burke.
The bulk of San Francisco’s 30 visits so far have been used on wide receivers — Indiana’s Omar Cooper Jr., Tennessee’s Chris Brazzell II, Texas A&M’s KC Concepcion, Texas Tech’s Caleb Douglas, Washington’s Denzel Boston — and pass-rushers — Texas Tech DE Romello Height UCF DE Malachi Lawrence.
