Ex-Red Sox Reportedly ‘Intrigued’ By This Idea Amid Reunion Rumors

The Red Sox might want to bring Justin Turner back, but there’s a chance the feeling isn’t mutual.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Patrick Mooney on Monday shared a free agency update on Turner, who remains on the open market ahead of his 17th MLB season. The veteran infielder appears to be a backup plan for multiple clubs that currently are in the mix to sign star third baseman Alex Bregman.

Two of those teams are Boston and the Detroit Tigers, who reportedly have “expressed varying levels of interest in both Turner and Bregman.” But as for the 40-year-old himself, he might have a clear preference for 2025.

“Turner and his wife Kourtney, who is from Indiana, are intrigued by the idea of spending the summer in Chicago, league sources said,” Rosenthal and Mooney reported. “Going to Wrigley Field as a Cub would complete a sort of big-market circle for Turner, who already has played for the Red Sox, Dodgers and New York Mets during his 16-year major-league career.”

The Cubs have been rumored to be involved in the Bregman sweepstakes as well, though most believe Chicago only would be able to land the two-time World Series champion if he agrees to a short-term deal. And a recent report on Bregman indicated he’s hell-bent on signing a contract with quite a bit of term.

Craig Counsell’s club, which underwent a series of changes over the offseason, also could really benefit from Turner’s leadership. So we probably shouldn’t be surprised if he ultimately calls the North Side of Chicago his home this year.
