🚨 BREAKING: Yankees Sign 6‑Foot‑6 Slugging First Baseman—Could This Towering Power Addition Reshape New York’s Lineup and Ignite a Fierce Playoff Push Next Season?

The New York Yankees have not made a big splash in free agency yet, but on Friday signed Ernesto Martinez Jr. to a minor league deal, according to MLB insider Francys Romero.

Martinez spent the last eight years in the minor leagues with the Milwaukee Brewers, but was close to making his debut last season. The 26-year-old has played in the outfield as well, but stuck to first base and designated hitter last season in Triple-A.

Martinez has not made his debut yet, but he had a strong spring training this year and is close to making his big league debut. He had an .850 OPS in spring training for the Brewers, but between Rhys Hoskins, Jake Bauers and Andrew Vaughn, he was never able to get a crack in the big leagues.

Yankees sign 6-foot-6 slugging first baseman: Report

The Yankees figure to have Ben Rice take over as their everyday first baseman, but Martinez could fight for a spot on the bench. He could be a solid option to serve a utility role, being able to play first base and in the outfield if needed. At the very least, he could start the year in Triple-A and be called up if Rice were to get injured.

He has 31 home runs in the minor leagues since the start of 2023. He has battled through injuries, but is now starting to find consistency in the minor leagues. He has hit over .270 in the last five seasons and averages 17 home runs and 77 RBI per 144 games, per Romero.

He credited the Brewers’ coaching and his personal hitting coach, Fernando Tatis Sr., to his recent run of success. He has a large frame and could potentially thrive as a power hitter in Yankee Stadium if given the chance. His deal includes two opt-out clauses for June and July.
