49ers QBs Brock Purdy (toe), Mac Jones (knee) both ailing

September 24 – The San Francisco 49ers are assessing their quarterback situation ahead of a Week 4 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars with both Brock Purdy and Mac Jones ailing.
Purdy returned to practice Wednesday after missing the past two games with a toe injury. Jones started the past two games for San Francisco but is now dealing with a knee injury that he aggravated during Sunday’s victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
In another injury concern, wide receiver Ricky Pearsall is dealing with his own knee discomfort and missed practice Wednesday.
Both quarterbacks are expected to be limited in practice to start the week. The 49ers’ third-string quarterback is Adrian Martinez, who has never taken an NFL snap.
Purdy was 26 of 35 for 277 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions in the team’s season-opening victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Jones has gone a combined 53 of 80 for 563 yards, four TDs and one interception over victories the following two weeks.
Purdy, 25, has completed 67.8 percent of his passes in 41 games (37 starts) over four seasons for the 49ers with 66 TDs and 29 interceptions.
Jones, 27, has completed 65.9 percent of passes with 58 TDs and 45 interceptions in 54 games (51 starts) over five seasons for the New England Patriots (2021-23), Jacksonville Jaguars (2024) and 49ers.
Pearsall, 25, has 16 receptions for 281 yards in three games of his second NFL season. In 14 career games (seven starts) he has 47 receptions for 681 yards and three TDs.
Another wide receiver, Jauan Jennings (ankle, shoulder) was set to miss practice Wednesday after not playing last Sunday.
