The New England Patriots announced the signing of rookie Tyron Herring to the practice squad on Tuesday. In a corresponding move, the organization released veteran Corey Ballentine.

Herring, 24, had visited Gillette Stadium for a workout after clearing waivers at the NFL’s 53-man roster deadline. The 6-foot-1, 201-pound undrafted free agent entered the league with the Green Bay Packers in April. He saw 72 snaps between defense and special teams during his rookie preseason.

After spending four years in the Ivy League at Dartmouth, Herring moved on to Delaware for the 2023 and 2024 campaigns. He served as a team captain with the Blue Hens, totaling 72 tackles, four interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery across 23 games. Second-team All-CAA honors and an invitation to the East-West Shrine Bowl followed while a graduate student.

Ballentine, 29, joined the practice squad in Foxborough shortly after its formation in August. The 5-foot-11, 196-pound corner served as a standard elevation for opening game of the regular season, handling 20 snaps and an assisted tackle on special teams.

Selected by the New York Giants in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL draft, Ballentine stands 70 games into his career, starting 11. The former Cliff Harris Award winner out of Washburn has also been a member of the New York Jets, Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, Indianapolis Colts and Packers. His run includes 101 tackles, one interception, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and 23.7 yards per kickoff return.

A spot remains open on the active roster as well as the practice squad.

The Jets signed linebacker Mark Robinson, a three-time elevation for the Patriots, to the 53 entering the final week of September.
