Phillies Announce Trea Turner, Alec Bohm Update Before Royals Game

Phillies place Trea Turner, Alec Bohm on the Injured List | The Good Phight

The Philadelphia Phillies (88-60) are on the verge of clinching the NL East, and now the team’s focus remains on getting fully healthy to make a deep postseason run.

Notably, the Phillies infield has been playing shorthanded over the past week, as both Trea Turner and Alec Bohm are on the injured list. Turner has been diagnosed with a grade 1 right hamstring strain suffered last Sunday against the Miami Marlins. The 32-year-old shortstop’s goal is to return ahead of the postseason, yet there remains uncertainty as it depends on how his body progresses and recovers. A huge part of Turner’s game relies on his speed, therefore rushing back a hamstring issue could be risky.

As for Bohm, the Phillies third baseman has been dealing with left shoulder inflammation, and although there’s no structural damage, it marks his second IL stint of the year.

Trea Turner, Alec Bohm Injury Update

Ahead of Saturday’s game against the Kansas City Royals, the Phillies announced via manager Rob Thomson updates on both of the injured All-Stars.

Thomson spoke pregame and said that Turner did some pool running and played catch, his first time participating in baseball activities, and the team is anticipating he begins hitting either Sunday or Monday. He continued to mention that Bohm has made significant progress and is feeling much better, while Thomson is hopeful that he can hit off of the tee today. (h/t The Athletic’s Charlotte Varnes)

This is an exciting development for the Phillies, as Bohm was expected to only spend the minimum ten days on the injured list, meaning that his return to the lineup could possibly come next week. Bohm has made 111 appearances this year and batted .272 with a .703 OPS, which is the second-lowest mark of his career. However, the 28-year-old has been playing through multiple injuries, which may be attributing to his drop-off in offensive production.

As for Turner, it’s also a huge step forward that he has resumed baseball activities and is nearing a return to the plate. His return is much more anticipated now that the team’s depth has continued to be tested up the middle, as his backup Edmundo Sosa is day-to-day with a groin injury.

Over 140 games, Turner has been one of Philadelphia’s most consistent players, posting a .305 batting average (leads NL), .356 on-base percentage, .815 OPS, 15 home runs and 36 stolen bases. He has also taken strides forward, becoming a force on the defensive end as well, and his absence from the lineup is a huge blow.
