Logan Webb celebrates after striking out Cody Bellinger during Game 5 of the NLDS on October 14, 2021.
Logan Webb picked up his 14th win of the season on Monday September 8, 2025 as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 11-5.
Webb threw 6 innings, gave up 4 runs and struck out 7 batters. Not his best outing ever, but the reliable, competitive innings that the Giants have come to expect from Webb.
Also, with those 7 K’s, Webb surpassed 200 strikeouts for the first time in his career. His 9.8 strikeouts per nine innings average is the highest of his MLB career.
The 200 strikeout milestone really put into perspective how great of a season Webb is having. Not only is it the first time Webb has reached 200 strikeouts, but he is the first pitcher in the whole national league to hit the 200 K mark. Yes, he got there faster than Paul Skenes.
He also has the most innings pitched in the national league with 184.2. He made his second career All-Star game this season and yet again has not missed a single start with injury.
Webb doesn’t throw 100 miles an hour or have a sub 3.00 ERA, so he goes under the radar. But he should be the Cy Young winner this season. He in fact still could be if things go really well in the last few weeks of the season.
What Would Strengthen Webb’s Case For Cy Young?
The Cy Young award is given annually to the best pitcher in both the American League and National League. If there was a pitching MVP, perhaps Webb would win annually. But this isn’t the pitching MVP. The Cy Young is for the BEST pitcher, so Webb needs to be unequivocally the best.
Still, if Webb helps the Giants make an improbable run to the postseason, that would only strengthen his case for the Cy Young award. The Giants are currently 3 games back of the New York Mets for the final National League Wild Card spot.
Statistically, if Webb gets two more wins, it would be the highest win total of his career, which would stand out to voters. If he can get his ERA under 3.00 and his K/9 above 10, that would also certainly help.
The biggest single way that Webb could change his Cy Young outlook is by having a signature performance.
Major League Baseball has not had a single no-hitter thrown this season. If that stands, it will be the first season since 2025 without a no-hitter. If Webb becomes the only pitcher to throw a no-hitter this season, that would certainly be significant to voters. Webb has yet to throw a no-hitter in his career.
But even just a complete game shutout against the Los Angeles Dodgers would vault Webb up the Cy Young ladder. If healthy, Webb will likely make 3 more starts before the season ends, and it’s looking like 2 of those will come against the Dodgers.
He needs to pitch even better than he has all season to make a run at the Cy Young, for sure. But with the 2025 Giants, we’ve learned not to count anything out until the bitter end.
What Could Keep Webb From Winning
Apart from Webb not being the most glamorous, hard-throwing, Livvy Dunne-dating pitcher in baseball, there are a few statistical categories that may keep him from winning pitching’s most prestigious award.
For one thing, Webb is not great at keeping batters off the basepaths. He’s currently leading all of baseball with 185 hits allowed in 184.2 innings. That’s basically a hit allowed per inning, which isn’t great.
To his credit, he has also just faced the most batters in baseball.
Back in 2023, when Webb finished as the Cy Young runner up, he led the National League with a 6.26 strikeout to walk ratio. That number is down to 4.90 despite his increase in K’s this season.
This is also his first season without a complete game or a complete game shutout since 2022.
Skenes’s 2.05 ERA and 0.95 WHIP will be hard to beat. The one advantage Webb can gain over Skenes, other than if he throws a no-hitter, is if the Giants make the playoffs. The Pirates will certainly not be in the postseason.
But two other Cy Young favorites, Cristopher Sánchez and Freddy Peralta, have helped their teams all but lock up a trip to October.
It’s a tough road that would require a dominant three games from Webb. But given that he’s already leading the National League in several key statistical categories, Cy Young voters should not count him out.
Giants fans, what have you thought of Logan Webb’s season?
