‘Third and Jauan’ might have employment again soon.

After the initial frenzy of the 2026 NFL free agency period subsided, it quickly became evident that former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings was not going to land a new deal anytime soon. With more than a month remaining between the start of free agency and the NFL Draft, many teams in need of receiving help pivoted their attention toward the incoming rookie class rather than committing significant money to available veterans.
That delay has now come with a tangible cost for the 49ers.
Thanks to a new league rule stating that free agents who sign after the draft no longer factor into the compensatory pick formula, San Francisco’s decision to let Jennings test the market without a quick resolution has cost them a potential compensatory selection. The team is now hoping they’ve already addressed the loss by selecting Ole Miss wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling with the No. 33 overall pick in the draft — a big-bodied, physical receiver who also brings significantly more speed than his predecessor.
Meanwhile, Jennings himself remains unsigned as the post-draft free agency window begins to heat up.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the veteran wideout may be close to finding a new home. Schefter reported Tuesday that Jennings is currently on an overnight visit with the Minnesota Vikings, with discussions set to continue into Wednesday.

The timing makes strategic sense for Minnesota. Despite holding nine selections in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Vikings focused almost exclusively on bolstering their defense and did not add a single wide receiver. Bringing in a proven, high-end WR2 like Jennings on a short-term, value-oriented deal could provide an immediate boost to an offense that still needs reliable weapons alongside Justin Jefferson.
Jennings’ production over his final two seasons in San Francisco demonstrated that he can function as a legitimate No. 2 receiver on any depth chart. His physical style, contested-catch ability, and reputation as a reliable chain-mover earned him the nickname “Third and Jauan” among 49ers fans. However, the relatively quiet market he has encountered since becoming a free agent suggests his asking price may have been higher than many teams were willing to meet in a wide receiver-heavy draft environment.
Should the Vikings and Jennings reach an agreement, it would mark the end of an era in San Francisco. The 49ers will move forward with Stribling as the apparent heir apparent in the slot and big-receiver role, while Jennings potentially begins a new chapter in purple and gold — a transition that would feel particularly strange given his long-standing contributions in the Bay Area.
For now, all eyes remain on the outcome of Jennings’ visit in Minnesota. With the draft concluded and a fresh wave of veteran signings expected in the coming days, the veteran receiver’s long wait on the open market may finally be nearing its end.
One thing is certain: “Third and Jauan” still has football left to play — the only question is which team will ultimately reap the benefits of his services.
