Hated Rival Expected To Snatch Alex Bregman Away From Astros

As the New York Yankees focus on retaining superstar outfielder Juan Soto, they reportedly also have their sights set on a big infield addition – Houston Astros’ third baseman Alex Bregman.

With Soto expected to command a record-breaking contract and potentially moving to another team in free agency, Bregman could be a strong backup plan to boost the Yankees’ offense.

Longtime MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports recently predicted that Bregman will wind up in pinstripes.

“Bregman has always loved the spotlight, dreamed of playing on the big stage, and what’s bigger than New York. He’ll have both New York teams bidding for him but the Yankees will be the ultimate winner,” Nightengale wrote.

Bregman, who turns 31 in March, has been a fixture in Houston since he entered the league in 2016, building a reputation as one of the league’s premier infielders.

Despite a slow start in 2023, he wrapped up the season with a .260/.315/.453 slash line, a .768 OPS, 26 home runs, and 75 RBIs over 145 games. His second-half stats were even stronger, with a .834 OPS and 14 home runs.

The two-time World Series champion also has a strong postseason track record, tallying 19 homers and a .789 OPS across 99 playoff games.

Notably, Bregman has indicated flexibility regarding his position, saying he’s open to moving to second base if his new team requires it.

With Gleyber Torres also entering free agency, this versatility could allow the Yankees to slot Bregman in at third base while shifting Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second.

Meanwhile, the Yankees are set to meet with Soto and his agent, Scott Boras, in California to discuss the possibility of retaining the young phenom.

It’s become crystal clear that the Bombers won’t be getting any sort of hometown discount with Soto. Although he loved his short time in New York, Soto is expected to go with the highest bidder.

Many insiders predict Soto will make a decision during or even before the MLB Winter Meetings, which are scheduled for December 9-12.

First of all, what do you think ends up happening with Soto?

As for Bregman, do you think it would be a smart move for the Yankees to snatch him away from Houston???
