he New York Yankees have overcome some brutal pitching setbacks this season and are headed toward the playoffs in relatively good shape.
After losing franchise ace Gerrit Cole for the season in spring training, without reigning American League Rookie of the Year Luis Gil for much of the campaign and with Clarke Schmidt set to miss virtually all of the year as well, the Yankees’ rotation depth has been tested. But Max Fried, Carlos Rodon, Will Warren and Cam Schlittler have the chance to take the team deep into a playoff run after emerging as a solid unit.
In fact, that Yankees rotation has overcome its injuries so well that the team was able to cut two-time All-Star Marcus Stroman last month, eating the remainder of his $37 million contract, and they haven’t looked back since.
“The Yankees released Stroman in August after he posted a 6.23 ERA and a 26-16 K-BB ratio in 39 innings,” Jake Elman wrote for FanSided. “Stroman never fit with the Yankees, who moved him to the bullpen last September and would have likely kept him there if not for various injuries this spring.”
Clearly, the Yankees were unable to find a trading partner for Stroman and his contract, but Elman believes the pitcher won’t be able to return to the major leagues on a new deal either. He named Stroman one of the ex-Yankees stars “who won’t play another MLB game.”
“There likely isn’t much of a market for a 34-year-old pitcher who publicly resisted moving to the bullpen and who has a history of confronting fans,” Elman added.
At his height, pitching for the Toronto Blue Jays, Stroman was one of the most effective starters in the game. Unfortunately, after an ignominious end with the Yankees, fans might never see him return to the mound again.
