49ers Fans Hold Breath Awaiting Final Word on Jauan Jennings’ Injury Before Seahawks Showdown

One of the San Francisco 49ers’ training camp-long injury scares appears to have subsided.

Wide receiver Jauan Jennings missed all of OTAs because of a calf injury. Then he re-injured the same calf early in training camp and didn’t return until a bonus practice before the start of the regular season.

There’s some question as to whether his calf injury was the lone culprit for his absence. Jennings was also unhappy with his contract situation and at some point during the offseason requested a trade if a new deal couldn’t be reached. Jennings and the team didn’t come to terms on a long-term extension or a massive raise. He did agree to a reworked contract that now includes up to $3 million in playing time incentives.

Here’s what we know about Jauan Jennings’s status for Week 1:

Jauan Jennings injury update

The calf injury that plagued Jennings in OTAs and training camp appears to be behind him. The 28-year-old was back in practice Monday and was limited for Wednesday and Thursday’s sessions before getting a full practice in Friday.

Will Jauan Jennings play vs. Seattle Seahawks?

All signs point to Jennings suiting up for Week 1. How much he plays after missing virtually all of training camp is a different story. There’s a chance he gets a full complement of snaps, but conditioning could be a factor that trims some playing time off of his typical workload.

What Kyle Shanahan said about Jauan Jennings’s injury update

“Yeah, real confident,” Shanahan on Friday said in his post-practice press conference. “I think Jauan’s had a real good week. Got a number of good workouts over the weekend and stuff which adds to the conditioning. We had our fourth practice today. So, I think he’s gotten better and better throughout the week and excited to see him out there on Sunday.”

Who will start for the 49ers if Jauan Jennings is out?

If for some reason Jennings is unable to play Sunday, Marquez Valdes-Scantling would probably take the early WR2 snaps across from Ricky Pearsall. With rookie Jordan Watkins officially doubtful to play, Skyy Moore is the only other WR on the active roster.
