Joc Pedersons Rangers Turnaround Still Has One Catch

Joc Pederson’s journey with the Texas Rangers this season has been nothing short of a rollercoaster. After a rough start that had fans at Globe Life Field voicing their discontent on April 5, Pederson has slowly but surely begun to win back their favor. On that day, he launched his first home run of the season, a promising sign considering last year’s injury-plagued campaign that left him struggling to find his rhythm.

Fast forward twenty days, and Pederson is showing glimpses of the player the Rangers hoped for when they signed him. While he may not be setting the league on fire, he’s certainly been a steady contributor.

His numbers tell a story of gradual improvement, with a slash line of .241/.366/.310, one home run, and four RBIs. Though not eye-popping, these stats mark a positive trend, especially after starting the season with an 0-for-16 slump.

He’s managed to get on base in six of his last eight games, batting a respectable .280 in April.

Pederson’s role with the Rangers is clear: he’s there to face right-handed pitching, and aside from a brief stint at first base, that’s exactly what he’s done. His bWAR of 0.1 is a notable improvement from last year’s -0.3, hinting at a potential return to form. While he’s not close to his career-best bWAR of 3.3 from 2016, the signs are encouraging.

Diving into his Statcast data reveals some intriguing insights. Pederson’s walk rate is at an impressive 16.2%, placing him in the 91st percentile in the Majors.

His hard-hit rate of 55.3% and average exit velocity of 93.1 mph are also standout figures, indicating he’s making solid contact when he connects. These metrics are a big part of why he’s been able to turn things around.

However, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Pederson’s whiff rate is alarmingly high at 36.4%, landing him in the sixth percentile.

His strikeout rate isn’t much better, sitting at 26.5% in the 29th percentile. This suggests that while he’s not chasing pitches outside the zone, he’s still swinging and missing too often on pitches within it.

This is an area that needs significant improvement if he’s to reach the heights of his 2023 performance that caught the Rangers’ attention.

As the Rangers look to boost their on-base percentage, Pederson’s .360 OBP and 11 walks are positive developments. But to truly maximize his impact, reducing his whiff and strikeout rates will be crucial.

With Wyatt Langford and Corey Seager in the mix, Pederson’s position in the lineup might shift, but his role as a key contributor remains unchanged. The Rangers need a more consistent version of Pederson, and while they’re seeing progress, there’s still room for growth.
