Jake Haener #3 of the New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints surprised fans and analysts Tuesday with a roster shuffle few saw coming. Instead of leaving quarterback Jake Haener on the practice squad, the team promoted him to the 53-man roster.
Haener has been more of a developmental project than a contributor in New Orleans. With Spencer Rattler starting and rookie Tyler Shough assuming backup duties, Haener’s promotion adds a new and intriguing wrinkle to the Saints’ quarterback depth chart.
This move fills the roster spot left open by the release of safety J.T. Gray. Gray was cut in another unexpected move on Monday.
Deepening the Depth Chart
The announcement came without fanfare when the Saints formally confirmed that they had elevated Haener to the 53-man roster. Though he lost the training camp battle to replace Derek Carr, the organization had high praise for the former fourth-round pick out of Fresno State.
“Jake did a great job and had a great camp, unfortunately, he had the injury early on in the offseason, but he did a really nice job for us,” said offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier when Haener was released last week.
Carrying three quarterbacks reflects a clear strategy shift for New Orleans. With Rattler and Shough both limited in experience, head coach Kellen Moore is keeping his options open.
Mixed Reaction Highlights the Surprise
John Sigler of Saints Wire described the move as both unexpected and understandable. He wrote, “This is a surprising decision from the Saints, who were expected to keep Haener on the practice squad under new NFL rules.”
By placing him on the 53-man roster, the Saints can use the emergency quarterback rule. This allows teams to dress a third quarterback on game day who only plays if the two ahead of him are unavailable, without counting against the 48-man limit.
Saints Clarify Roles at Quarterback
The Saints’ quarterback room now has a clear hierarchy: Rattler leads as starter, Shough supports as backup, and Haener adds emergency depth.
Shough’s positioning offers a balance between youth and experience. Meanwhile, Haener brings modest game experience and reliability for the rare high-pressure moment. His presence ensures the Saints won’t be scrambling if unexpected injuries occur.
The Saints’ decision to elevate Jake Haener is more than a routine roster adjustment. It reflects a deliberate strategy by general manager Mickey Loomis and the front office to safeguard the team’s most important position. Haener may not be expected to take the field soon, but his presence on the 53-man roster ensures the Saints have stability and insurance behind rookie Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough.
This move also protects Haener from being claimed by another team, a possibility given the league’s constant search for quarterback depth. By securing him now, New Orleans keeps control of a young player they drafted and invested in developing. The decision underscores the organization’s attempt at long-term planning, balancing immediate needs with future potential, and highlights how the Saints intend to manage their roster during their rebuild.
The Saints open their season at home on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.
