Sale started 29 games for Atlanta, winning the National League pitcher’s Triple Crown for the most wins, strikeouts and best ERA for qualified starting pitchers. He also led the NL in ERA+, HR/9, SO/9 and FIP. His 6.4 fWAR was the second best of his career.
Sale was coming off a season in which he pitched in 20 games for the Boston Red Sox in 2023. Although he was a slightly above average pitcher that season, his career had been side-tracked by injuries going back to 2019, when he started 25 games for the Red Sox. Between 2020 and 2022 he pitched in only 11 games.
Sale, the favorite to win the National League Cy Young after finishing in the top six in seven season in the American League, also won a Gold Glove Award earlier this off-season.
Sale is the fourth Atlanta Braves player to win the award since it began in 2005. Other award winners were Tim Hudson, Jonny Venters and Josh Donaldson.
