“You look at Pallante early in that first inning he was able to settle in and still grind through five and keep the score which was good to see,” Marmol said. “After that it got a little tough and it forced us into situations where the game’s on the line… You can’t continue to throw one (plus innings) on JoJo (Romero) and (Ryne) Stanek, but you either lose it there or you take your shot.
“So we took our shot, we were able to get Stanek there with the big punch-out as well, but long wait in the dugout, he goes back out and they put some good swings on him.”
The Cardinals’ offense has a number of talented players. There will be games where St. Louis scores six runs like the team did on Monday. However, if this ball club wants to upset expectations, they will need their bullpen to perform at a much more consistent level.
Ryne Stanek and Matt Svanson both surrendered three runs on Monday. Justin Bruihl also gave up a run.
Overall, the Cardinals have had ups and downs this year. St. Louis is 5-5 overall. The Cardinals will look to get back on track on Tuesday night at 6:45 PM EST in Washington.
The St. Louis Cardinals were defeated 9-6 by the Washington Nationals on Monday. Starting pitcher Andre Pallante turned in a respectable performance, allowing two runs across five innings of work. The Cardinals bullpen surrendered seven total runs, however. Manager Oliver Marmol addressed the bullpen’s struggles after the game, via MLB.
