Orioles’ Rising Star Brandon Young Crushed by 60-Day IL Exile Fans Left Stunned by the Ironic End to a Promising Season Run

Orioles move rookie pitcher Brandon Young to 60-day IL, ending his season

MLB: Houston Astros at Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles moved rookie pitcher Brandon Young to the 60-day IL on Wednesday, ending his season.

The team placed Young on the 15-day IL Friday with a left hamstring strain, but elected to shift the right-handed starter to the 60-day list once it became apparent he wouldn’t be able to recover before the end of September.

In other moves Wednesday, the Orioles called up right-handed pitcher Roansy Contreras and infielder Emmanuel Rivera from Triple-A Norfolk. To make room, they designated infielder Vimael Machin for assignment and optioned right-hander Yaramil Hiraldo to Norfolk.

Prior to this setback, the 27-year-old Young had seen his share of struggles this season as he posted a 1-7 record and a 6.24 ERA over 12 starts. Young allowed 12 home runs over 57 2/3 innings with 47 strikeouts for the 60-72 Orioles.

His best start came against the Houston Astros on Aug. 15, when he came within four outs of the first perfect game in Orioles history. He finished with a 1-hitter over eight innings with six strikeouts in a 7-0 win.

Young was injured less than a week later in a game against that same team, suffering the hamstring injury while covering first base on a ground ball.

Contreras, 25, has no major league appearances this season. For Triple-A Norfolk, he has gone 7-3 with a 3.73 ERA in 28 appearances (14 starts).

Rivera, 29, is batting .297 for Norfolk with one homer and 31 RBIs in 58 games. In 27 games with the Orioles this year, he is batting .229 with three RBIs.

Machin, 31, had 12 plate appearances and collected one hit, a home run, for Baltimore in 2025.

Hiraldo, 29, has 12 appearances for the Orioles, posting a 5.65 ERA over 14 1/3 innings.
