Back in 2011, the local TV stations called him the “Poster Dog for Animal Cruelty”. A starving little dog in Tunica, Ms. that was found eating rocks as he struggled to survive.
Joey’s rescue by the Tunica Humane Society and his miraculous journey back to life was followed around the world. Along the way, he stole the hearts of countless people that still ask about him today.
Joey is the dog that put the Tunica Humane Society on the map. We picked up thousands and thousands of followers during his time spent at our shelter. When he was adopted on Christmas Eve in 2012, it made the national news.
When we were deciding on Joey’s forever family, it was so important to me that Joey would have a child to grow up with. It was a precious little boy that stole our hearts when he and his parents came to meet Joey at our shelter. Watching Brett with Joey was magical. It was only fitting that Joey would become part of this very special family at Christmas time.
That young boy is now a young man. Brett and Joey have grown up together over the last 13 years and they have always had a special bond. This morning, Joey and his dad and Brett came to visit us.
Seeing Joey so happy, so healthy, so clearly loved by Lloyd and Brett after all these years was like Chicken Soup for Our Souls at the Tunica Humane Society. I am still crying tonight just thinking about today.
Joey is 14 years old now and not showing any signs of slowing down. This amazing dog will always and forever be one of our biggest Comebacks at the Tunica Humane Society.
Dr. Pam Chandler saved Joey many, many years ago, when other doctors wrote him off as too far gone. His precious family has given him a home filled with abundant love, and we are so very grateful to all of them for his beautiful life.
Against all odds, Joey survived unforgivable cruelty and neglect. Today we celebrate him and his family. A dog that some said didn’t stand a chance of surviving, went on to be a Miracle.
Where there is breath, there is hope. Joey taught us that and we have never forgotten it. Joey is the reason we never give up at the Tunica Humane Society.
