In the months and weeks leading up to training camp, many fans and analysts wondered why the Green Bay Packers had signed so many wide receivers to their 90-man roster. In addition to having Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson, Dontayvion Wicks, and Malik Heath, the Packers also re-signed Bo Melton and inked Mecole Hardman to a one-year deal. Then, they went out and selected both Matthew Golden and Savion Williams in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Despite having all of these wide receivers on the roster, Green Bay continued to add undrafted free agent pass catchers throughout the offseason, leaving many to wonder why. Watson, of course, is expected to miss the first few weeks of the season due to recovering from a torn ACL, but everyone else on the roster was healthy and expected to contribute.
As it turns out, though, it is a good thing the Packers loaded up on players at the position.
Green Bay Packers Head Coach Gives Unfortunate Update on Dontayvion Wicks and Jayden Reed

Unfortunately for the Packers, nearly all of their veteran wide receivers from last season are dealing with some sort of injury in the midst of training camp. None of them played in Green Bay’s preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts, and head coach Matt LaFleur decided to also keep Golden out as a precaution.
Doubs was dealing with a back injury, but was able to return to practice on Monday. Watson, as mentioned, is still recovering from his torn ACL and has been rehabbing throughout the offseason.
But Wicks and Reed, the two most targeted Packers pass catchers from last season, are also dealing with injuries that kept them out on Saturday. Wicks has a calf injury that has kept him from practicing throughout the entire month of August, and Reed was recently seen in a walking boot after a foot sprain.
When asked on Sunday if either or both of them will be back soon, LaFleur said, “I sure hope so.”
Green Bay Packers Fans Are Melting Down Over the Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks Update

Obviously, this is not the news Packers fans wanted to hear. Rather, they would have liked to have heard LaFleur say that they will return this week or would certainly be ready for the start of the regular season.
But he did not.
And fans are having a meltdown over it:

Obviously, if Wicks and Reed are not able to play to start the season, and with Watson already out, it does make Green Bay very thing at wide receiver.
That being said, they have Golden, who has formed a great chemistry with Jordan Love according to camp observations. Both Love and LaFleur have said in the past, too, that they want to get tight end Tucker Kraft more involved in the offense.
They might have to if neither are ready to play when the season opener comes.
