Detroit, Michigan – Just 12 hours after the state of Texas unexpectedly hosted Detroit Lions owner Sheila Ford Hamp, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell convened an emergency meeting with the owners of all 32 NFL teams, which included the participation of Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
The meeting took place amid escalating tensions between Detroit and Texas over the future of the team.

What angered the Lions community even more was the announcement following the meeting concerning a proposal from Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
Governor Whitmer called for a re-vote within the NFL on the decision to keep the Lions in Detroit, questioning the transparency of the previous voting process.
Previously, Detroit Lions had received support from 25 out of 32 NFL teams to allow the team to move.
However, Governor Whitmer argued that because the team generates revenue for the state, the votes of the 32 NFL owners should not be the sole deciding factor. She proposed that Michigan state should have 50% of the decision-making power, rather than allowing the owners to have full control.
This proposal sparked a major controversy, leaving the Lions community feeling not only betrayed but also accusing Governor Whitmer’s leadership of damaging the legacy of the team.
“The Lions have never faced a more difficult situation. We’ve made so many plans, but all of them have to be postponed just to deal with issues stemming from our own state. We cannot concede any further. Our goal remains unchanged, and we will continue to fight for it, no matter the challenges,” Sheila Ford Hamp said during a press conference, causing the entire city of Detroit to fall silent.
Governor Whitmer’s proposal has ignited strong opposition from the Lions community, with many believing the team is being dragged into a political battle it cannot control.
Many believe this is an attempt to prevent the Lions from moving to Texas – a state that has made strong commitments to financial and infrastructure support.
With support from Sheila Ford Hamp and Texas Governor Greg Abbott for the relocation, anger within the Lions community continues to rise.
Fans are wondering if the team will be able to retain its valuable Lions legacy.
Meanwhile, the NFL continues to search for a way to resolve the crisis, as losing a historic team like the Detroit Lions would be a great loss to both the city of Detroit and the entire league.
