49ers’ Christian McCaffrey gets major injury update after Achilles, knee problems last season

49ers’ Christian McCaffrey gets major injury update after Achilles, knee problems last season originally appeared on The Sporting News

The San Francisco 49ers need Christian McCaffrey.

Last season, they hardly had him. He dealt with an Achilles problem, and as soon as he was back from that, a PCL problem in his knee popped up.

But this season, things are looking up. CMC is looking spry, and the reviews are positive.

NBC Sports Bay Area reporter Matt Maiocco recently shared with insider Ari Meirov a summary that should make all 49ers fans smile:

“He looks like Christian McCaffrey.”

Good deal for San Francisco.

Two seasons ago, McCaffrey was the best running back in football. He led the NFL with 1,459 rushing yards, scored 14 touchdowns, and also caught 67 passes for 564 yards and seven more TDs.

But last season, McCaffrey only got on the field for four games. He carried 50 times for 202 yards (4.0 ypc) and had 15 catches for 146 yards.

He wasn’t the only injury problem for the 49ers, but he was one of the biggest, and San Francisco scuffled to a 6-11 record.

The reviews for the entirety of the offseason have been positive for McCaffrey. Some pundits have wondered if he can actually come back and be his usual self after the problems, but there hasn’t really been any doubt that he’ll be on the field.

It’s a bit of fingers crossed between now and Week 1 for the 49ers. They don’t need a meaningless training camp or preseason injury to set McCaffrey back.

But if they can get to the opener with CMC at full strength, it’s a major plus for their season.

All they want is their running back to look like Christian McCaffrey, and that’s what they’ve got, and that’s good news.
