Breaking: Cowboys to Sign New ‘Folk-Hero’ QB After Rush and Lance Failure

Cowboys to Sign New ‘Folk-Hero’ QB After Rush and Lance Failure

Dallas Cowboys to Sign New 'Folk-Hero' QB Will Grier After Cooper Rush and Trey Lance Failure - Athlon Sports

The Dallas Cowboys are not getting any better when it comes to the quarterback depth chart. But they are getting deeper.

As Dak Prescott spends his Monday in New York seeking one more opinion on his likely season-ending injury, the Cowboys are reflecting on Sunday’s 34-6 blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles at AT&T Stadium by making additional QB decisions. One of those decisions involves Cooper Rush.

Another involves Trey Lance. And a third is about a reunion with old pal Will Grier.

Rush on Sunday made his first start since 2022 and it was a forgettable one.

He went 13-for-23 for 45 yards with two fumbles. Lance also got to play as Prescott watched from the sideline, nursing that torn-off-the-bone hamstring while plotting a Monday visit to doctors in New York who will give him one more medical opinion before he likely succumbs to reality and undergoes either season-ending surgery or (likely) season-ending rehab.

But Lance wasn’t good, either, failing to give Dallas the “punch” that owner Jerry Jones had promised the third-stringer would bring.

Rush isn’t done here; on Monday, coach Mike McCarthy announced from here inside The Star that the vet backup will be the starter for the 3-6 Cowboys next Monday when the Houston Texans pay a visit to AT&T Stadium. (It’s a night game, so there will be no sun controversies to distract the world from the real problems around here.) And Dallas will use the two QBs it has, with Lance again in play.

Assuming the deal goes through, Grier is not here to beat anybody out, and he’s not here specifically due to the failings of the other two. The Cowboys simply need another body, another arm. And he knows the system. It would be fun if there was a more exciting answer here. But … bodies to get through this dismal year.
