Well, the trade deadline has come and gone and the Atlanta Braves essentially stood pat. While deeply frustrating from a process standpoint for many, at least Alex Anthopoulos answered for it with his media availability and there is certainly some value to the clubhouse and fans to not stripping the roster down for parts. However, that doesn’t change the fact that other than Rafael Montero, Atlanta looks very similar to how they did before the trade deadline.
Don’t expect things to stay that way. Yes, the season for trades is officially over now that MLB got rid of waiver trades in August, but that doesn’t mean everyone that is on the Braves right now is going to make it to the end of the season. In fact, that is highly unlikely.
Here are the Braves players that survived the trade deadline, but won’t make it to the end of the season
Obviously we are talking about guys that might get bounced from the roster altogether for the most part, so we are looking for players that can’t be optioned to the minor leagues and who are of questionable value the rest of the season. This isn’t a 40-man roster thing as there are a lot of other factors in play there and Atlanta often “removes” guys from the 40 man only for them to reappear in the minors and be the same depth pieces they had always been.
Erick Fedde
So this is assuming that the Braves get one of their many injured pitchers back and one of the fill-ins has to go. Bryce Elder can be infuriating, but he has shown at least some competency and he can be optioned anyways. The main candidates are Erick Fedde and Carlos Carrasco and it is a close call between the two starters, but it feels like Carrasco is the kind of veteran mentor the Braves want around whereas Fedde will have to earn the right to stay and that seems unlikely.
Tyler Kinley
There are a few bullpen candidates to get sent off, but we’ll go with the recently acquired Kinley for now. Enyel De Los Santos already got DFA’d and Rafael Montero got traded at the deadline and Kinley both can’t be optioned and has struggled overall thiss season. If the Braves do what they really, really should and give their hot shot relief prospects a chance, Kinley probably should get the boot.
Raisel Iglesias (kinda)
Okay, okay…the Braves are not going to release Iglesias. He was too good and meant too much to the team before now to do that to him as he is about to hit the market. However, Iglesias has been bad enough this season that there is a real world where playing him may actually be more harmful to his value and the Braves. We’re betting that Iglesias’ struggles continue and then he comes down with some sort of non-serious “injury”, goes on the shelf for the rest of the season, and the Braves call up some relief help while wishing him all the best in the future.
