Cardinals get Red Sox prospect who hit 500 foot home run as 13-year-old for Steven Matz

The St. Louis Cardinals have begun their involvement in the MLB trade deadline. With the team expected to sell some of their top relievers, the Cardinals have begun their sale before deadline day gets underway.

St. Louis already traded Ryan Helsley to the New York Mets, and now, the Cardinals are swinging another deal, this time, sending setup man Steven Matz to the Boston Red Sox, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.

Passan reports that the deal is agreed upon and pending a physical, implying that the trade, barring a surprise, will go through. Once it does, it’ll be the Cardinals’ second move at the 2025 MLB trade deadline, both involving relievers.

Matz has a 3.44 ERA this season in 55 innings pitched, and has a 121 ERA+, the best number he’s had since his rookie season in 2015. Although he’s a rental, the Cardinals were able to get an interesting prospect from the Red Sox in return for Matz.

According to Passan, the Cardinals are acquiring Blaze Jordan, a 22-year-old prospect who boasts some impressive highlights in his baseball career. Jordan hit a remarkable 500-foot home run when he was just 12 years old.

The first baseman has impressed this season in Triple-A for Boston. He has a .872 OPS on the year with a .308 batting average, 12 home runs, and 62 RBIs. He’s been a solid hitter in the minors his entire career and is a nice pickup for St. Louis.

Jordan, Boston’s 17th-ranked prospect, has some ties to the Cardinals’ front office. Chaim Bloom, who is set to take over for the Cardinals’ front office as the head of baseball operations in 2026, drafted Jordan when he was with the Red Sox in 2020.

The Cardinals have dealt two players at the trade deadline so far, with both being relievers. The return for Matz is exciting, as Jordan could make a push to see MLB action later this season, or at the least, sometime in 2026.
