The SF Giants are struggling right now. They just got swept by the Toronto Blue Jays and while it is easy to gripe about the team’s offense, they also have a glaring defensive liability in left field that they cannot do anything about.

Heliot Ramos has been one of the best hitters for the Giants this season. He is slashing .267/.338/.431 with 14 home runs and 49 RBI. He may well have been an All-Star snub based on his offensive stats, but he has not been anywhere near as good defensively.

SF Giants have a huge defensive liability in left field with Heliot Ramos

Ramos has made four errors in left field this season. That is almost impressive considering he has only made two errors in the rest of his big league career. Going by advanced stats, Ramos is the worst left fielder in baseball according to Outs Above Average.

It is odd because Ramos is a good athlete and he is more than capable of making spectacular sliding or diving plays. Yet, it seems like he can sometimes just fall asleep on more routine plays and can be a bit too lackadaisical out there.

He also takes odd routes to the ball and seems like he does not always get the best read off the bat, often misplaying balls. This seems like something he needs to work on or the coaching staff needs to address because it is becoming a more and more glaring issue.

Ramos improving defensively is really the only thing the Giants can hope for because his bat is too valuable in the lineup. They need him in the lineup every day for his offensive production and the designated hitter spot is already occupied by Rafael Devers so the Giants are caught in a tough place.

Maybe once Devers starts to play first base, then the Giants can work Ramos into a DH role a little more often although they would probably prefer to have Wilmer Flores as the DH so they have as many of their best bats in the lineup as possible.

For now, though, the Giants are stuck with Ramos out in left. Maybe a little extra practice and coaching can help improve things, but the Giants need to try something because with how bad their offense has been a costly error by Ramos could be the difference between winning and losing.
