The Boston Red Sox have had a revolving door at the back end of their starting rotation for the majority of the decade. In the three-plus seasons since their ALCS appearance in 2021, 32 different pitchers have started games for the Red Sox. Their season total is up to eight starters this year, with one young prospect standing out from the bunch as a potential long-term addition to the rotation.
Hunter Dobbins was placed on the 15-day Injured List on June 21 with an elbow strain. The 25-year-old was coming off a four-inning outing in San Francisco that jumped his ERA from 3.74 to 4.10.
Dobbins also recently made headlines after some comments regarding his disdain for the New York Yankees led to controversy over his father’s claims of being drafted and traded by the organization. The right-hander is once again making headlines, for reasons much more exciting for Red Sox fans.
“Red Sox pitcher Hunter Dobbins is scheduled to throw a rehab start this weekend in Portland, I’m told,” reported Andrew Parker of Beyond the Monster. “Dobbins has been on the IL since June 21st with an elbow strain.”
The Red Sox have a team ERA of 4.66 since Dobbins was sent to the IL. Dobbins currently touts a 102 ERA+ and a FIP of 3.86 in 10 starts this season.
The right-hander’s return offers stability to a team that is struggling to gain momentum after the Red Sox’s six-game win streak quickly gave way to a six-game losing streak this month.
