Yankees manager Aaron Boone has dealt with multiple pitching injuries this season.

MLB’s trade deadline season is finally upon us, and the New York Yankees are certainly a team that expects to make welcome additions to their roster. The Yankees have had a solid first half of the season, but their offense is slipping a bit as they lack true power on the infield. Aside from Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and maybe Jazz Chisholm, there is no true power threat in that lineup.

As July plays out, the Arizona Diamondbacks are one of baseball’s most interesting teams. They certainly could be sellers if they lose a handful of games, but may also want to keep their star players in hopes of an August/September playoff run.

Diamondbacks Reportedly Shipping Eugenio Suarez

The Arizona Diamondbacks are reportedly taking offers for star third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who just hit his 26th home run on Monday. Suárez is second in the National League in long balls, just behind Shohei Ohtani.

In a recent Bleacher Report trade article, writer Joel Reuter predicts the New York Yankees will acquire Suárez before MLB’s July 31st trade deadline. This would certainly be a blockbuster deal that would send shockwaves through the league. However, for New York, it is World Series or bust. Their American League East grip on the division is slipping, and they need to finish strong if they want a favorable seed.

Here is what Reuters said about the prospective trade:

“Veteran slugger Eugenio Suárez looked like a candidate to be designated for assignment at this time a year ago. He hit .216 with a .668 OPS and 28.9 percent strikeout rate during the first half of the 2024 season. The D-backs stuck with him, and he rewarded their faith with a .942 OPS and 20 home runs after the All-Star break. That was enough for Arizona to exercise its $15 million club option on him. The 33-year-old has picked up right where he left off this season, posting a career-high 141 OPS+ with 26 home runs and 68 RBI through 81 games. If the D-backs decide to sell, he might end up being the most impactful rental bat on the market this summer.”

Why This Deal Makes Sense for Yankees

Since Oswaldo Cabrera has gone down with an injury, the left side of the New York Yankees’ infield has been brutal from an offensive production standpoint.

This has meant more playing time for Oswaldo Peraza and D.J. Lemahieu. In over 250 plate appearances combined between the two, their collective WAR is just 0.5. Lemahieu has run his course as a big leaguer, and it’s time for the Yankees to move on. Reuter also indicated that it would only cost the Yankees their fifth-ranked prospects.

As the schedule heads towards the All-Star break, keep a close eye on how the Arizona Diamondbacks are performing, because it will likely decide whether they will be buyers or sellers. Teams like the Yankees hope they will sell so they can benefit from it, and there are even other players from the Diamondbacks that other teams may want.

MLB’s trade deadline is fascinating, and we have already seen shocking blockbuster deals before the calendar had even turned to July.
