The New York Yankees’ infield has underperformed this season, and one of their former top prospects is not free of blame.

Any production the Yankees get out of DJ LeMahieu at this point in his career is a win, as they know he is not the player he once was. However, there are rightfully higher expectations for some of their younger players who showed promise.

In 2022, Oswald Peraza was the Yankees’ No. 2 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. However, he has been underwhelming as a big leaguer. In 124 games, he has a .197 batting average.

This season, he has been with the big league team all year, although primarily in a bench role. He was thrust into a starting role when Oswaldo Cabrera and Jazz Chisholm Jr. were both hurt. That time further showed the Yankees that he was not going to pan out in the big leagues. The Athletic’s Yankees insider Chris Kirschner predicted that Peraza was “next in line” to be designated for assignment.

“If Peraza had value, I think he would have been traded by now,” wrote Kirschner. “He’s next in line, on the position player side, to get DFA’d. Maybe a rebuilding team would send a lottery-ticket prospect to the Yankees to skip the waiver-wire line. But, yeah, Peraza has been disappointing.”

Peraza had the potential to be a key player in the Yankees’ infield. However, his shortcomings have become clear, and the Yankees cannot rely on him to be more than a bench player or defensive utilityman at this point. However, it’s hard to argue that the Yankees cannot easily find a better option to occupy that role as well.
