Kyle Shanahan must be seething after latest Lil Wayne song name-drops rival

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan must be pretty upset that his friend and head coach of the hated Los Angeles Rams Sean McVay beat him twice in 2024.

However, he may be even more upset that his favorite rapper Lil Wayne name-dropped McVay in a song.

For those who are unfamiliar, Shanahan is a massive fan of the rapper, Lil Wayne. He was partially inspired by Lil Wayne’s actual name, Michael Carter Jr., when naming his son Carter. This earned Shanahan and his son a care package from the rapper back in 2018, which was a classy move.

However, Shanahan must be at least a little ticked off after hearing Lil Wayne’s latest album, which is called Tha Carter VI. The second track from the LP, “Welcome to Tha Carter,” features a line that must have made Shanahan’s heart drop, “Smokin’ that bomb LA like I’m McVay.”

Ouch.

Not only does McVay have a Super Bowl title, but he also has a name-drop from Lil Wayne himself. Those may be the only two things Shanahan wants in his life, and his old buddy has both of them.

Niners fans can at least take some solace in the fact Frank Ocean mentioned the 49ers in his 2019 song, “In My Room,” with the line, “Look at my skills, running through blocks like 49ers.”

That will be small consolation for Shanahan, though.

Maybe this is the added motivation he needs heading into the 2025 season. We know Shanahan has been so heartbreakingly close to winning a Super Bowl in his career. It could be tough to keep on trying in the face of so much heartbreak and failure.

Perhaps a minor slight from his favorite rapper is just what he needs to light the fire yet again as he and the Niners chase a Super Bowl title.

He has his favorite defensive coordinator back in Robert Saleh. He also has his franchise quarterback in Brock Purdy locked up. The head coach said the team feels refreshed and ready to go after the injury-plagued 2024 season in which the team was still dealing with the hangover of their brutal Super Bowl loss.

Maybe, just maybe, 2025 could be the season the stars align for Shanahan and the 49ers and they are able to bring home the franchise’s sixth Lombardi Trophy.

If they can, then maybe Lil Wayne will drop a song with the line, “Makin’ a plan like my man Shanahan,” and the coach’s life will truly be complete.
