Alex Cora has shouldered blame for the Red Sox’ struggles. Through the first 64 games of the season, Boston leads MLB with 53 errors.
The 17 one-run losses, mental errors and 588 strikeouts have fans wondering whether Cora’s seat should be hot, or if he’s the right man to lead the Red Sox.
During an appearance on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show,” chief baseball officer Craig Breslow was asked if he has “full confidence” in Cora’s ability to get the Red Sox back on track.
“I do,” Breslow said. “And when a team is struggling like we are, and is falling short of the lofty expectations that we have set for ourselves, that fans had set for us, I think we all feel a sense of responsibility and accountability. But we’ve got to figure this out, and that’s where we’re spending all of our time right now.”
The Red Sox had hefty expectations on them this year after they made upgrades to their roster in the offseason that included signing Alex Bregman and trading for Garrett Crochet. While both players have performed well, Bregman landed on the injured list and the team hasn’t always shown up in games to support Crochet during his starts.
Boston has also dealt with injuries — including a season-ending one for Triston Casas — and have players who haven’t lived up to expectations thus far.
There’s still time for the Red Sox to turn things around, and Breslow wants to make sure they’re making decisions best suited for the team.
“We’re always going to be anchored to what is best for the team, and we have a lot of confidence in Alex as the leader of this group,” Breslow said. ”He’s won in Boston as a player. He’s won in Boston as a manager. We have conversations daily about everything that we can do to get us back on track. That’s where our focus is, and that’s where it will remain.”
